News of 68 redundancies at the Courtaulds Lingerie factory in Limavady, Co Derry, confirms the continuing decline of Northern Ireland's clothing and textiles industry. More than people are employed in the plant, but Courtaulds has said cutbacks are essential to secure the futures of the remaining workers. Forty-eight jobs will go altogether, while another 20 will be transferred to Nottingham.
Courtaulds has shed half its workforce in recent times. One hundred and thirty-seven jobs are being lost with the closure of a County Armagh textiles plant, in the latest blow to the industry in Northern Ireland. Courtaulds Lingerie is shutting down its factory at Carn, outside Portadown.
The Sara Lee Corporation has long been the 'olde curiosity shoppe' of the global consumer products industry. Over the coming weeks, a hundred 'bra wars' headlines will propel Sara Lee into our consciousness, as the hostile bid, pitting Playtex against Courtaulds' Berlei and Gossard brands, goes right to the underwire.
Courtaulds was a United Kingdom -based manufacturer of fabricclothingartificial fibresand chemicals. It was established in and became the world's leading man-made fibre production company before being broken up in into Courtaulds plc and Courtaulds Textiles Ltd. In Courtauld installed a steam engine at the Bocking mill, and then installed power looms at Halstead.
The demerger of Courtaulds Textiles inwhich seemed to promise shareholders so much, seems to have run out of steam. From p on demerger, the shares ran up to p in March but have performed unimpressively ever since. They fell 7p to p yesterday, as the company announced pre-tax profits of pounds 6.

Courtaulds Lingerie is to close its plant in Portadown, Co Armagh, and the manufacturing part of its base in Morecambe, Lancs.
